Gutter Guard Maintenance
Do gutter guards need maintenance?
While Gutter guards can significantly reduce the amount of gutter cleaning requirements, they do not eliminate the need for gutter maintenance. Contrary to what some experts may say, gutter guards are not maintenance free. Just like your car, gutter guards require regular maintenance to continue functioning at their best. Gutter guards will remain effective for their entire lifespan as long as they are properly maintained. All gutter guards have limitations. No gutter guard is designed to block 100% of all debris from entering the gutter system. Over time, a sediment of fine dirt and pollen particles will eventually accumulate at the bottom of your gutters. The sediment can promote moss and weed growth which will clog up your gutters and cause significant blockages. The moss can also attach itself and grow through and over the actual mesh.
So, even if you have a good gutter protection installed, you still need to regularly inspect your gutter system to ensure that it is functioning properly. Gutter guards do a great job of reducing maintenance requirements, but they don’t eliminate them entirely. It’s important to check and clean your gutter guards at least once or twice a year, depending on your environment.
We recommend that homeowners should occasionally sweep or blow off debris that collect behind or on top of the gutter guard. We also recommend that you occasionally flush the gutters to clear sediment that often accumulates at the bottom of the gutters. Remember to also clear the downpipes.
Keeping up with these maintenance tasks helps your gutter guard system last longer and work more effectively. You should observe how your gutters perform, especially after heavy storms in order to help catch any issues early on.
Gutter Guard Clean & Repair Service
Our comprehensive professional cleaning process involve a number of steps:
- We sweep and blow off any debris sitting behind or on top of the mesh.
- For screwed down systems, all angle trims are removed from the gutter lip.
- The gutter guard is partially lifted to access the gutter.
- We manually lift off any accumulated debris from the gutters.
- We completely flush all the gutters with water including the downpipes.
- We can carry out any necessary mesh repairs such as patching up any cracks and reapplying silicone to joints.
- We carefully re-fit your gutter guard and secure everything back into place.
Needless to say, this process involves many technical steps that need to be done correctly. It is best to hire a specialist to get it done properly and protect your investment.
If you have a Polyethylene gutter guard that is older than 10 years, it will most likely have some wear and tear. Unfortunately, some really old guards cannot be salvaged if they have too many splits or tears. In that case, we may recommend replacing the gutter guard if you still require gutter protection. Depending on your environment, we recommend that you service your gutter guard every 18-24 months.
